Why Is Water Cremation Better Than Regular Cremation?

No one likes to think about having to put their beloved dog or cat down due to an illness or condition, but the unfortunate fact of life is that it does come to an end. Our furry companions offer so much love and adoration that when the time comes, it’s one of the most difficult situations. Many pet owners find comfort in the thought that their friend lived a wonderful life — they had the happiest days chasing balls in the yard, sticking their heads out the car window, or curling up in your lap for a nap. So even though there isn’t a way to turn back the clock, there is a way to make their end of life as comfortable as possible, and for you to honor them in death as well.

At Heavenly Paws Pet Aquamation, we offer a pet cremation option that uses a more natural process to cremate the body — aquamation, or alkaline hydrolysis. Using water and natural salts found in soil, your pet’s body will be placed into an alkali bath and broken down in a way that is similar to if they were buried. This process has been recognized for centuries (since 1888, in fact), but has only recently become a more widely known option used for pet cremation as well as human cremation. So why should you choose aquamation over the more traditional fire cremation?

Benefits of Aquamation

It’s More Natural

Like we mentioned above, the alkaline hydrolysis process is a more natural process than traditional fire cremation. Your pet’s body, and even our own bodies, naturally decompose through the alkaline hydrolysis process, but it can take up to 25 years. However, with Heavenly Paws Pet Aquamation, the decomposition process is essentially accelerated.

It’s Environmentally Friendly

A significant benefit of this pet cremation process is that it is more environmentally friendly than traditional flame-based cremation. Because a flame is not used, alkaline hydrolysis uses around 90% less natural gas; it saves more than 66% electricity; it reduces more than 90% of carbon dioxide emissions that can be released during a flame cremation; it has 1/10th the carbon footprint of traditional cremation; and it is 100% mercury-free. According to the EPA, a fire cremation releases arsenic, cadmium, formaldehyde, mercury, and nickel. Many people simply choose a traditional cremation method because that’s what has been done for so many other pet owners. But if you are concerned about the resources a flame-based cremation requires and the toxins released into the air, aquamation offers a much more energy-efficient solution.

It Leaves More of the Body’s Remains

When your dog or cat dies, you want to be able to keep as much of them with you as possible. With water cremation, the process leaves around 20% more of your pet’s ashes. Whatever you decide to do with your pet’s ashes, you can be confident that you’re honoring their life with as much of them as possible.

It’s a Similar Cost

Flame-based cremations and water-based pet cremations are both priced similarly, so if your budget is a concern, Heavenly Paws offers pricing from $69 for aquamation services. We even offer financing options if you would like to utilize aquamation, but don’t have the funds available at the time. Above all, we want your pet to get great afterlife care.
